Can a Christian Have a Demon?
Faithful believers disagree on this question. All agree Jesus saves, indwells by His Spirit, and grants victory over the enemy. The debate concerns the extent of demonic influence on a believer.
View A: Believers Cannot Be “Possessed”
Because the Holy Spirit dwells in believers (1 Corinthians 6:19), some argue a demon cannot occupy the same “house.” They prefer the term “oppression” to describe external attack.
View B: Believers Can Experience Significant Oppression
Others note New Testament warnings to believers about the devil’s schemes (Ephesians 4:27; 1 Peter 5:8) and describe cases where Christians needed deliverance from entrenched strongholds, using terms like “demonization” to indicate a spectrum of influence.
Common Ground
- Jesus’ victory is decisive (Colossians 2:15)
- Believers must resist the devil (James 4:7)
- Sanctification and discipleship are essential for freedom (Galatians 5:16–18)
Regardless of terminology, the pastoral question is practical: where have lies been believed, sin tolerated, or trauma exploited—and how does the gospel bring lasting freedom?
